Fit4Feed
In addition to our work on sourcing responsible procured commodities, we are engaged in discussion about optimal use of agricultural land. As the worlds population is growing, the demand for biomass and food increases.
Introduction
Feed - food - fuel
The world's need for biomass is enormous: food needs to be produced for billions of people, and at the same time there is an increasing demand for biomass from energy production.
The world population is growing and so is the demand for food and energy. The amount of land we as humans can use is not increasing any further. This requires choices. Royal Agrifirm Group is actively engaged in this issue. One of the questions is how we can produce feed that does not compete with human food and makes optimal use of by-products and former food. Agrifirm is conducting a great deal of research in this area.
Changes take place step by step. This is why it is important to have clear parameters to monitor and stimulate this change. This is why Agrifirm developed the Fit4Feed protocol. This parameter can be used to calculate what proportion of the feed supplied is suitable for animal feed. Suitable for livestock feed means: not in competition with human food, use of crops that stimulate healthy soil and stimulate the production of local proteins.
